Top and below left: The humanities class of 1987, La Martiniere school, Calcutta. I studied history, politics, English and sociology. I am the curly haired girl in the middle of the second row. When we left school, many of my classmates left to study in the US and I lost touch with them. All I had was this picture and their signatures. Decades later, we all reconnected via the internet. Many of the Anglo-Indian dishes I got to know were through my school friends, such as the Hussainy Curry on page 64.

Middle right: My mother would love to make me wear her sarees. This was my last visit to my Calcutta home before my parents moved to Aligarh. That house held so many memories and I still miss it.

Bottom: A relaxed Phopoo Jani in my London home. My aunt had got a few days off from hospital and we had invited her to our home. I was still unable to cook, so the dinner that night was cooked by Mushtaq. The next day, my aunt called my mother and told her she was going to teach me some basic dishes when we returned to Cambridge!
